Job Summary The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.The Laboratory of Bacteriology in the Division of Intramural Research within NIAID seeks an outstanding scientist to serve as a tenure-track investigator conducting research on Coxiella burnetii at NIAID's Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana. RML is located in the scenic Bitterroot Valley of southwestern Montana, providing easy access to some of the finest outdoor recreational opportunities in North America. See more information about RML .The Laboratory of Bacteriology (LB) studies bacteria that cause important human infections, including intracellular and arthropod-borne bacterial pathogens. In addition, LB conducts research on antibiotic-resistant bacteria listed as serious or urgent threats in the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. The laboratory's ultimate research goal is to identify novel or improved strategies to control bacterial diseases, including development of diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics. See more information about LB .The ideal candidate will have expertise with C. burnetii host-pathogen interactions and be expected to develop a vigorous, independent research program on the biology and pathogenesis of C. burnetii infection. The incumbent is strongly encouraged to participate in clinical collaborations with investigators on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Independent resources are committed to the position, including start-up funding, space (dedicated biosafety level [BSL]-2 and shared BSL-3/4 laboratories), support personnel, and an annual budget for services, supplies, and salaries.Laboratories at RML conduct high-impact, innovative basic and translational research on bacterial and viral agents with the goal of developing diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics. Research conducted at RML includes studies of vector/reservoir transmission, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and host immune response of bacterial and viral pathogens of concern to global health. RML's state-of-the-art facilities include BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories, animal facilities that can accommodate work with small animal, nonhuman primate, and small livestock models, and core facilities for genomics, bioinformatics, electron microscopy, and flow cytometry. Required Qualifications Doctoral degree (Ph.D., D.V.M, M.D.) or equivalent in a relevant field In addition to meeting this requirement, the ideal candidate will have a strong publication record demonstrating the potential for creative research.Appointees may be a US citizen, Legal Permanent Resident or non-US citizen who are eligible for a valid work authorization.This position is subject to a background investigation.
