NEEDED: Athletic Trainer LOCATION: 2500 Investigation Parkway, Quantico, Virginia 22135 SCHEDULE: Work hours may range from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM in order to accommodate schedules of DEA training activities. Facility: 5:00 AM – 7:00 PM Clinic: 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM QUALIFICATIONS: Have a bachelor’s degree in a Health Science, with a focus/Minor in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, or related degree. Have a master’s degree in athletic training or related Degree (preferred). Be a Certified Athletic Trainer. Have and maintain appropriate license or be eligible for licensure in the State/ Commonwealth of Virginia to perform the duties of a Certified Athletic Trainer. Be BLSHCP and First Aid certified. Have at least two (2) years of relevant experience: collegiate level, sports medicine preferred. Emergency Medical Technician/ Advanced Emergency Medical Technician certification (preferred). Be certified as a Conditioning and Strength Certified/Specialist (ACSM, Cooper Institute or equivalent). Have and maintain a valid state driver’s license. JOB DUTIES: Duties shall include but are not limited to: Support full range of medical and health programs by providing care for musculoskeletal injuries/illnesses and addressing prevention, safety, and welfare of DEA students and staff (noncontract) members. Day-to-day clinical operations of the athletic training program include muscle, bone, or acute soft tissue injury, illness prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning. Work under supervision of Academy Health Service Clinic physician and cooperatively with the medical staff of the Academy Health Services Clinic to ensure prompt care, recovery, and appropriate/timely documentation of care provided. In the absence of the Clinic Administrator, operational oversight is provided by the Nurse Coordinator of the Academy Health Services Clinic. Training event coordination and scheduling may be provided by either the Nurse Coordinator or the on-site DEA Clinic Administrator. Daily communications with the physician regarding patients evaluated by the athletic trainer and progress of interventions. Attend scheduled high-risk activities of DEA students and staff (non-contract), such as physical training, testing, defensive tactics sessions, or challenge events as assigned. Some of these activities are conducted outdoors. Monitor MCBQ activity status (temperature determined) during outside activities occurring in hot or cold weather to anticipate trainee weather-related needs. Understand and support the goals of the human performance/physical training and defensive tactics training programs and teaching techniques used for these programs, as requested. As requested by the COR, interact with instructors and students individually regarding exercise performance and science, with emphasis on injury prevention, through development of approved course material, demonstrations, or training programs on the proper use of equipment. Provide exercises to improve balance and strength, and home exercises and therapy programs. Application of protective or injury-preventive devices, such as tape, bandages, and braces, and use of athletic training equipment. Maintain a clean work area, free of clutter, ensuring that patient records are properly stored each day prior to departing. Perform functional maintenance, and schedule calibration with the Nurse Coordinator as needed, for athletic training equipment and supplies. Universal precautions followed as well as employing techniques for minimizing transmission of communicable diseases. Administrative duties include medical record documentation, medical resource management and maintenance, statistical reports, and other duties as assigned. Medical documentation and activity reports will be completed on a daily basis and be available for weekly physician review. Teaching responsibilities include formal presentations, approved by HRU leadership, to DEA students or staff and informal education sessions with individuals. Work in collaboration with the medical staff to evaluate effectiveness of services provided and devise improved techniques and methods of implementation consistent with national trends in the delivery of patient/athlete care. Awareness of short- and long-term program goals shall be maintained and recognition of opportunities for potential involvement in new service areas will be expected. Attend regularly scheduled meetings with HRU program management and CMO to develop goals, objectives, and plans for rehabilitation and athletic healthcare services. Employ current standards, modalities, and manual therapy, and work within scope of practice and state standards of a Certified Athletic Trainer in the State/Commonwealth of Virginia, and as defined by the American Medical Association. Compliance with DEA standing orders and DEA / Department of Justice (DOJ) policies and procedures. When physician is not available and within scope of the Board of Certification of the National Athletic Trainer Association (NATABOC) guidelines and standards: conduct an initial assessment of the situation and patient, provide initial emergency care, notify physician, or activate EMS for serious medical emergencies. Shall be physically able to: Assist with or transfer individuals of various weights/heights. Lift up to 30 pounds, required to move or transfer supplies and equipment, or to perform an ergonomic task. Carry athletic training and rehabilitation equipment and health-related materials for necessary distances. Bend, reach, stoop, squat, kneel, and grip to administer patient care and perform necessary employee tasks. Perform infrequent climbing for job-related tasks. Stand for long periods of time, have good mobility skills, and be able to walk moderate distances. Sit for extended periods of time during meetings or while entering data/documenting Communicate effectively with personnel and supervisors. Tolerate work in hot, cold, and inclement weather, and be able to adapt to changing weather conditions. Tolerate loud noises such as bangs, pops, and other simulated law enforcement training activities. Have intact near and far visual acuity and accommodation and intact manual dexterity skills to perform job tasks and complete documentation. Shall be responsible for expenses of license maintenance (biennial CEUs) and required certifications.
