As a newly created position, the Director of Accounting plays a key leadership role within the Finance Department with a focus on management, systems development, and quality assurance. In overseeing all HRiA accounting functions, they develop policies and procedures, manage compliance, and create new systems to improve efficiency and controls. The Director of Accounting ensures the integrity and quality of financial data and is responsible for producing clear, accurate financial reports. They motivate and guide a team of four accounting staff and report to the Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. This role may be performed remotely or in-office. HRiAs annual operating budget is over $33 million with an additional $10 million in pass through grants. HRiA is on a growth trajectory and is funded through a diverse and complex revenue stream of federal, state, and local government contracts, fees for service, and restricted grants. This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting salary range of $110,000 to $125,000. Duties and Responsibilities: Management Supervise Accounting Manager, Staff Accountant, and other accounting staff, promote staffs professional development, and build a high functioning team. Ensure quality customer service and accurate, timely information are provided both internally and externally. Oversee accounts payable, cash receipts, cash disbursements, payroll-related postings, and general ledger functions performed by staff. Work closely with the Managing Director, Budget & Contracts, to coordinate and integrate accounting with other finance functions. Systems & Policies Streamline accounting processes and expand the use of online financial management (ERP) and related systems functionality; develop enhanced and automated financial controls. Regularly document and update accounting policies and procedures, disseminate to HRiA staff, and ensure compliance. General Ledger Manage complex deferred and restricted revenue tracking; calculate and post monthly revenue releases and accruals. Monitor end of month/period end closing activities to meet deadlines and ensure that all general ledger accounts are reconciled to subsidiary records. Review general ledger data for accuracy through report analysis, transaction and reconciliation approvals, and internal auditing. Reporting Produce monthly organizational financial reports including the statements of Financial Position, Revenue & Expense, Cash & Investments and provide explanatory analyses of variances and trends. Create and review dashboards; monitor key financial data, including cash balances and accounts receivable aging. Oversee annual financial audit, liaise with audit partner and manager, provide high level organizational data, ensure the accuracy of data provided by staff, and manage PBC requests to meet deadlines. Oversee tax and other filings, including IRS Forms 990, Massachusetts Form PC, and 1099s; provide retirement plan reporting schedules. Other Manage day-to-day cash, bank, and investment account processes, including ACH payment system. Review and approve payroll and related transactions. Perform other duties as assigned. Candidate Qualifications: This position requires: A Bachelors Degree in accounting, business administration or related field with a minimum of twelve years experience in nonprofit finance, or A Masters Degree in accounting, business administration or related field with eight years experience in nonprofit finance, and A minimum of six years experience in management and supervision. Technical knowledge, skills, and experience, including: Financial management (ERP) and other finance-related systems, Nonprofit fund accounting and GAAP, Advanced Microsoft Excel and Office 365, Systems, policy and procedures, and report development, Project management, Supervision, team and staff development, Ability to effectively communicate key data. Personal and professional characteristics, including: Collegial and outgoing nature with strong interpersonal skills, Demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining vigilant attention to deadlines and details, Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and to delegate appropriately, Effective verbal communication skills and the ability to produce polished written work, Demonstrated resourcefulness, creativity in problem solving and overall good judgment, A commitment to value diversity of thought, backgrounds, and perspectives, Ability to work calmly under pressure with a sense of humor, Integrity beyond reproach with a passion for the work of the organization and its success.
